Anyone interested in over 40 baseball, come to Brahan Spring Field
5 (Across from Milton Frank Stadium) every Sunday at 4:00 pm for the next
6 weeks to see if they are interested in playing. We are trying to start
2 new over 40 teams. Any one interested needs to come, bring a friend who
might be interested and try it. This is how the league got started, getting
enough players that first year to have 4 teams. This gives new players
a chance to come out and practice for a few weeks to see if they still
can play. At a certain point we will fill any slots on existing teams and
try to start new teams. This league is open to all players, you do not
have to "make" the team.
1997 marks Huntsville's Over 40 Baseball's 8 season. This is not softball, but real hardball played under regular baseball rules with very few exeptions.
We are currently looking for additional players to both fill out existing rosters and possibly creating additional teams. Last year the league had 8 teams averaging 17 players per team. Don't think your too old to play baseball, we currently have 30 players over 50 years old playing regularly. None of us had played real baseball for 20 years or so when we started with 4 teams 8 years ago. It's never to late, and once you play, you get hooked. I am 54 years old and last year I played in about 35 games including tournaments and plan to continue playing for as long as I can.
Last year our league sent teams and players to both Florida (over 40) and Phoenix, Arizona (50 & over and 40 and over) to play in national tournaments. The team that went to Florida won the 40 and over division in November. In the 5 years we have had teams go to Florida, they have made the finals 3 times, winning it twice. 50 and over players went to phoenix last year with players from Atlanta and made it to the finals, losing the championship game by 2 runs.
Anyone having any questions or would like any information about our
league, don't hesitate to cal Tom Jeffreys (w)880-6677 or (h)852-1997 or
email the SIGNMAN@TRAVELLER.COM.
I would encourage anyone who loved to play the game when he was young to
come and give it a try. It's a whole lot more fun than sofball. We are
affiliated with a nation organization (Men's Senoir Basesall League) that
currently has over 40,000 ballplayers over 30 years old.
