Summer League is already upon us. It is the intention of the City of Huntsville to create the league by first paid first accepted. This will come as a shock to some teams that have been able to wait till last minute to pay their fees. We are not trying to lock anyone out, but the aim is to allow more teams an opportunity to play at the Complex. The due date has been posted on our sign at the entrance and in the Newsletter. Copies of the previous newsletter are available in each press box. This was also posted on the r-sports web page. We are unable to make personal calls as reminders due to our shortage in staff. It is entirely impossible to try and call over 120 teams to remind them. If we were to miss just one it would be disaster. All this just to give our sincere apologies to the teams that are unable to play in the Summer League. There is a very limited number we can accommodate. As of this writing we do have slots available.

League Teams Beerware
Under League rules, the Conduct section, paragraph a., the City of Huntsville has stated that drugs and alcohol consumption will not be tolerated. Please try to remember that if you, as a player, are caught with open containers in the dugout or on the field you are risking being suspended from play. No less than two (2) games. We have to enforce this for the safety of your players as well as the atmosphere for the spectators. By the way, there is NO alcohol consumption permitted in City Parks. This does include the spectators. Let’s all do our best to keep the games fun and alcohol free.

Standings
League standings will be posted on the Coca-Cola bracket board. If you find a discrepancy please contact the Sportsplex office and we will attempt to sort it out.

Rules Committee Meetings
The Men’s Rules/Grievance committee meeting is set for Wednesday May 14, 1997 at 8:00 PM. We will meet in press box field 2. The Co-Ed meeting will be held Thursday May 15, 1997 at 7:00 PM in press box field 2. The Women’s committee will meet next week. In these meetings we will discuss the placement of teams for the Summer League and any problems experienced during Spring League. Those not on the committee are welcome to attend, however, voting is set aside for actual committee members only.

R-Sports.com and Rain Outs
We are attempting to utilize the web page to announce rainouts. The rain out number is 881-1990 ext. 8092. We have recently experienced a major phone outage and this web page and phone number are good sources of information. The use of our e-mail is also a good way to communicate with us regarding practices and complaints. The fax machine and answering machine are working during this time. We are extremely sorry for any inconvenience this may cause to teams trying to reach us.

Featured Team -
Redstone Federal Credit Union The current Redstone Federal Credit Union Co-Ed softball team has been together for about five (5) years. At least half of the players on the team are employees of the Credit Union and take great pride in representing their company in this manner. The coach, Dee Dee Travis, is also the Human Resources Specialist at the Credit Union and a long term employee. Redstone Federal Credit Union applied for and received its charter from the United States Government on November 28, 1951. Eleven individuals with totaling assets of $55.00 started Redstone Federal Credit Union. They had no idea the Credit Union would experience the growth it has over the years. Today, this credit union is the largest in the state of Alabama and ranks in the top 25 credit unions in the country. The Credit Union team currently holds a 3-1 win/loss record. It looks like they are on their way to another winning season!

Blue Stitch - Red Stitch
The Legend ball company has started producing a blue stitch .47 core ball. This is not to be mistaken for the .50 core balls that also circulate with a blue stitch or black stitch. We are having a stamp made to put on the balls showing that they are approved by the City of Huntsville, Metro Kiwanis Sportsplex. Some teams are questioning the .48 core stamp on the Blue Stitch leather Legend. This stamp was in error. A clerical error was made by Legend but, we will honor the use of these balls. This does not by any way mean we will allow .50 core balls to be used. It is the pitcher’s responsibility to check the ball that is thrown in. If there is a question, he should approach the home plate official. THE CITY OF HUNTSVILLE HAS NOT AND WILL NOT APPROVE THE USE OF .50 CORE BALLS IN LEAGUE PLAY. This practice will result in forfeits for the offending team.

Who’s Playing Anyway??
We are experiencing problems with line-ups. Line-ups are due at the beginning of the game. They should be turned in at least 5 minutes prior to play. If your players have numbers on their shirts it is a good idea to put them on the line-up. Some teams are changing their batting order during play. This not only confuses the score keeper but it is illegal. We will not police this however if the opposing team catches this, it could result in a forfeit. There are phones to the press boxes and changes and additions should be called in. Changes in positions do not have to be called up. This is why it is a good idea to keep a copy of your line-up. It will keep you from becoming confused as well as the score keeper and the official. When adding a player, they are to be added to the end of the line-up. Co-Ed teams remember to make your line-up alternating genders. If you have an odd number beginning (9), begin with the gender you have the most in (5).
